Clint Allen

B.Music, Grad.Dip.Ed.(Sec.), A.Mus.A.(pf), A.Mus.A.(trp, distinction).

Clint is a graduate of Queensland University of Technology's Academy of the Arts where he studied trumpet under Mr Phil Ryan.   Also holding his A.Mus.A. (Associate Music Australia) in piano, he has headed brass and piano workshops in Brisbane and Sydney, lectured at QUT (multi-instrumental techniques) and taught instrumental music teacher at a number of Brisbane schools. in 2010, he completed his Masters of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University) with his final dissertation entitled Crossover Trends: The Nexus between the Third Stream Movement and Contemporary Music. Clint has also tutored both Principal and Second Study Trumpet (Classical) at the Queensland University of Technology.  He has also lectured at the QLD Young Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University) in Contemporary music composition (Composers Workshop) and directed various jazz ensembles. Clint is currently the director of the Big Band at the University of Queensland.

Clint has backed prominent artists including Don Burrows, Julie Anthony, James Morrison, Chrissy Amphlett, Anthony Calea, Mark Diesel, Leo Sayer, Rick Price, Christine Anu and John Waters, and has travelled with various ensembles both nationally and internationally.   Recently, he has performed and toured with BUZZ, a brass quartet formed by Musica Viva to educate young children around Australia and develop music programs in primary schools in both city and rural areas along the east coast of Australia. He is a versatile player who has performed in a variety of jazz and classical ensembles including the Alan Brown Big Band, the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra, the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra and the newly formed Gold Coast Symphony Orchestra. He has also played in pop/funk bands such as the Hip Hop Horns, Honey and Planet Funk, and world music groups such as the Doch Gypsy Orchestra.

Clint is currently playing in the Latin group, Hot Mambo (which was the resident Latin band at the Treasury Casino (Brisbane) for over four years) and the highly successful Hip-hop band, Resin Dogs.  Clint also is a regular recording artist in Brisbane appearing on various projects including the Resin Dog’s album's 'More' (2007) and ' Hi-Fidelity Dirt' (2003) and the acclaimed Butterfingers album 'The Deeper You Dig' (2006).  He has appeared at almost every major Australian festival including the Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass, East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, Livid and the Woodford Folk Festival. Clint has played in various musical productions including ‘West Side Story’ (2004) and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ (Brisbane season, 2006) which starred Topol as the lead character.    He has also appeared as a trumpet soloist with orchestras around Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast.

Clint is actively involved in the presentation and promotion of new music in Australia.     Clint's compositions and arrangements have been performed in Australia by various ensembles and in the USA by the Paducah Chamber Winds.   His (brass) chamber music group, the ‘Seventh Chapter Ensemble’ has established itself as one of Australia's finest contemporary chamber ensembles through its innovative repertoire and acclaimed performances.    The ensemble has commissioned works by local composers and subsequently released a CD in 2005 showcasing these works titled "With Bricks Thrown At Ya".    The ‘Seventh Chapter’ has been the recipient of Australian Arts Council grants (in 2002 and 2005) to develop new works that integrate new music and other art forms to draw a wider audience to the arts.     In 2003, the 'Seventh Chapter' presented a sold-out concert of new works at the Metro Arts Theatre where they featured the computer animations of Brisbane artist, Emily Nelson.    The ‘Seventh Chapter’ has performed extensively in self-styled concerts, in collaboration with ensembles Topology (directed by Dr Robert Davidson) and Isorhythmos (led by David Montgomery) and major music festivals (such as the Woodford Folk Festival’s Fire Event where they performed in to an audience in excess of 25000 people).      In May 2005, the group performed the Australian premiere of Eric Ewazen’s “Shadowcatcher - Concerto for Brass Quintet and Orchestra” (with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra).      Dr Ewazen, senior lecturer at the Julliard School of Music (New York, USA), traveled to Australia especially to attend the concert.

In 2005, Clint was awarded a Queensland Arts Grant to attend the International Brass Chamber Music seminar in the USA (University of East Carolina) hosted by the world renowned Meridian Arts Ensemble.      He has also had lessons with Mark Gould (Juilliard School of Music) and Laurie Frink (Manhattan School of Music), the world-renowned teacher of the Carmine Caruso trumpet technique.  

Recently, he has worked on the Playstation (PS2) computer game soundtrack, 'El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera', which was scored by Mick Gordon (Game Audio Australia).

Clint is often also involved with various side-projects including featuring in NORPA's 2006 acclaimed contemporary operatic production of "Electric Lenin", and the Australian premiere of Dutch composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis' "Heartbreakers" (for jazz sextet and samples), which was a featured event at the 2005 Valley Jazz Festival.   Clint is currently performing in Cleon Barraclough's new group, 'Soundscapes' and Dave Galea's fusion-funk band, 'Bassboy'. In 2007, he formed the new chamber/rock ensemble, 'The Trickster Project' (trumpet, saxophone, cello, piano, bass, drums) after commissioning Brisbane composer, Thomas Green to write music that blends classicism with modern grooves; the band premiered at the Brisbane Powerhouse in late 2008.

He is also a published author about contemporary music with articles published in RealTime Arts Journal (based in Sydney, Australia).
