The Zappa Big Band is about to perform again at the Globe Theatre (in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley). There are certainly many challenges in managing a 19-piece big band, but I think the reward of hearing Zappa's music in this context, is certainly worth it! It's now been 4 years since Tom and I have played in 'Seventh Chapter' together, but in 2010, we're now performing together again. Tom has written some new pieces (for trumpet, bass and electronics) which recently saw the light of day.
I recently submitted my dissertation for my (research) masters of music. My abstract started with: The third stream movement, first coined by Gunther Schuller in 1957, is a term used to describe the synthesis of jazz and classical music. This dissertation will investigate the historical context of crossover trends, how they developed and were perceived by musicians in the past, and the implications for contemporary composers and performers. An investigation into the socio-political factors that influenced the emergence of third stream music and its elevation to being recognized in today’s music setting was undertaken. An autoethnographic approach was adopted when interviewing leading international and local practitioners. These interviews provide varied opinions and give a contemporary insight on trends that are occurring today.
Sympatico, an ensemble that I (co)-formed late last year consisting of trumpet, piano and percussion, have started rehearsals again. We're intending on performing a recital of new works by composers Daniel Hamburger, Dafnis Prieto and Tom Green. The concert, scheduled to take place on Saturday 28 August at the Queensland Conservatorium, is part of the New Music Network's 2010 Concert Series, which can be viewed online here: www.newmusicnetwork.com.au/series10.html
Because i'm very lazy ethnomusicologist and seldom have time to update this website, I've started a blog which I'll post on occassionally. This can be found here: http://clinttrumpet.blogspot.com
